Onam Festival

One of the most prominent festivals in Kerala –  this harvest festival is celebrated by every religion and community across the State – at the beginning of the month of Chingam – the first month of the Malayalam Calendar for a period of 10 days during August/September.

According to legend the festival is also celebrated to honour King Mahabali – a legendry ruler who was  loved by his people and known for his justice and time of prosperity.  Each year Onam celebrates the return of King Mahabali to Kerala.

The vibrant and colourful Onam festival is promoted by the Government of India and is now a major Kerala tourist attraction.
