Whilst in South India, we urge you to visit some of the incredible temples standing proudly throughout Tamil Nadu. Known as India’s precious jewels, they are a sight not to be missed.
Boasting wonderfully elaborate architecture, the temples showcase the opulent and lavish tastes of previous royalty. Each has a unique and mesmerizing design and an equally intricate story to tell, so why not embark on a tour to see as many as you can! To follow is our recommendation of some of the incredible temples to discover.
Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai
One of the most ancient and famous temples, Meenakshi Amman is an architectural marvel. Adorned with thousands of vibrantly coloured figures of gods, goddesses and demons, it is quite breathtaking. Visited and enjoyed personally by our Managing Director; Elaine Craven, on her recent tour of the area, this exquisite structure comes highly recommended.
Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Chennai
If you find yourself close to Chennai, a visit to the Kapaleeshwarar Temple will not disappoint. One of the most sacred sites in Tamil Nadu, it is a significant pilgrimage site for the Shaivites. Brimming with a fascinating history and with intricate shrines inside, is sure to captivate.
Brihadisvara Temple, Thanjavur
Another, recently visited by our Director, Brihadisvara Temple is one of the largest temples in India. It has UNESCO World Heritage Site status, hence attracts thousands of tourists every year. Standing 216 feet tall, its tower claims to be the tallest in the world. It is also the only temple built completely of granite with the Apex structure on top weighing 80 tonnes and carved from a single piece of granite! Consequently, it is well worth a visit!
If you have toured Brihadisvara and have some time on your hands, why not combine a visit to Sir Ranganathaswamy and Jambukeswarer. Each just over an hours transfer, so ideal for a short temple tour.
